An Amishman with full beard. He is a widower 45 to 50 years of age, stern but compassionate, chosenby lot to lead the sect.

A young son of the Bishop.

Young daughter of the Bishop.

The same as Alma.

Nancy
The Bishop's oldest child, about 25 years of age. For ten years she has been the mother of the family and this has matured her considerably and has deprived her of an early courtship and marriage, the basis of her unrest. She is pretty and efficient.

Lydia
The Bishop's daugher, of the same age and with the same bubbling spirit as a normal teenager.

Jonas
An orphaned Amishman, about 25 years of age. He is not married and therefore, clean-shaven. Not being married has given Jonas more leisure time than most Amish and this, combined with a natural curiosity, leads Jonas to the edge of rebellion frequently, but it is the loss of his temper which pushes him into rebellion beyond his normal peccadillos.

Annie
An Amish widow of 40 years, self-reliant and admirably adjusted not only to the Amish life but life itself.

Eli
Annie's nephew visiting her from his home in Canada. It is the custom fo ryoung Amish to be sent to settlements in other parts of the country to rid them of wanderlust, mature them, and to find a spouse not too closely related.

David
A bakery delivery man, not Amish.
