Licensing 101: Frequently Asked Questions About Licensing Plays & Musicals

Here at Broadway Licensing Global, we want to make play and musical licensing as easy for you as possible. Below are some frequently asked questions that will help you navigate your licensing experience.

What is play and musical licensing?

Every play and musical has an author or a set of writers who own the copyright to their work. Whenever it’s being performed in front of an audience, they need to be properly compensated for their work in accordance with copyright law. If you want to perform a play or musical at your theatre or your school, you’ll have to obtain a license to do so.

How do I find the best play or musical for me?

We’re here to help.  Each of our sites (Broadway Licensing, Dramatists Play Service, & Playscripts) has shows recommended by performance group, whether you’re a school or community theatre or a professional theatre.  Check out what’s popular and new and check out our blog for more help. And you can always call or email our licensing team for recommendations.

How do I submit an application for rights?

It’s super easy.  Once you find the perfect play or musical for you, click the “Apply for Rights” button on the website, and you can fill out the required information like your performance dates, your venue location, and everything else that’s prompted.

What should I expect after I apply for the rights?

For most plays and musicals, you’ll receive an immediate response to your application for the rights. For some titles, and based on some restrictions in your area, it might take a little bit longer, but we’ll be in contact with you via email for every step of the way.

Once I secure the rights, what comes next?

Once we’ve confirmed your license and you’ve received your licensing agreement, your scripts and other applicable materials will be sent out to you, and you can get the ball rolling on your production. Please note that you must receive your licensing agreement before you can announce and hold auditions for your show.
